Diabetes and Sleep Apnea

Patients with diabetes are at high risk of having sleep apnea. The majority of patients that have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have obstructive sleep apnea.  It is has been said that sleep apnea may possibly be the reason why a diabetic’s sugar is out of control.  Diabetic patients are three times more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than patients without.
Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between obesity, diabetes, and sleep apnea.  The United States is said to have the highest epidemic.  The three are in close relation and all stem from the daily lifestyles of most Americans.
It is important to get tested.  Once diagnosed with sleep apnea you should first try to treat it by losing weight or stop smoking.    If these don’t work then your physician will mostly likely recommend that you be fitted with a CPAP, this machine has a mask the goes over your nose and delivers air pressure.  The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is very effective when treating sleep apnea and if used properly will provide immediate results.

Pediatric Power Wheelchairs

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control of the brain and is said to be caused by child birth, during pregnancy, and even after birth at up to the age of three. When this disability occurs it limits the movement and posture causing activity limitations. A child with Cerebral palsy might not be able to walk, talk, eat, or play the way most kids do.
Every child would want to enjoy a normal life like their peers, but having cerebral palsy restricts them from being able to do most things child would enjoy doing. Being restricted from leisure activities can have impacts on the child’s physical health, mental, and life satisfaction; however, by being able to provide them with a power chair allows them to participate in school activities, more sociable, and also more likely to be accepted by their peers. If your child is suffering from cerebral palsy and they are restricted from doing what kids enjoy doing, please call us at 828-277-1400 for additional information on our power wheelchairs.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Linked to Erectile Dysfunction

In a new study at Mount Sinai Medical center in New York research suggests that men with (ED) erectile dysfunction should be screened for obstructive sleep apnea as there may be a direct link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and erectile dysfunction.  According to the study after adjusting for age and other health conditions, patients with ED were more than twice as likely to have sleep apnea as their normal counterparts.  The study evaluated 870 consecutively enrolled men through a cardiac screening program.  Patients were screened for OSA and ED through clinical questionnaire and were asked other questions about their health such as history of cardiovascular disease, smoking, and diabetes.  Sixty-three percent of patients in the study screened positive for OSA.  The likely hood for having OSA increased as the severity of ED increased.
The good news for patients with both OSA and ED is that treatment of OSA through CPAP therapy, together with drug therapy has been shown to improve symptoms of ED.
